Learning Maths class III

 A new way to learn mathematics
·         Learning mathematics is more than just finding a correct answer.
·         It is a process of exploration and investigation, of discovering and relating new ideas.
·         It is also a process of solving problems and of applying learned skills to new problems.
·         Maths has to be learned in such a way that it cultivates effective problem solving skills.
·         Only after encountering mathematical concepts at a concrete level do students learn the mathematical vocabulary that then connects to a fully symbolic level of representation and manipulation.
·         Communication is an essential element in learning. In communicating their explanations of concepts or processes, students can check on their own understanding and test their own reasoning.
·         Working together in small groups on meaningful tasks and explorations, all children are actively involved in learning and have a natural forum for communication.

BASIC FACTS.
                First students learn the meaning of each operation- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division- by solving a variety of problems. They use counters to represent quantities and manipulate them to solve the problems.  Through repeated manipulations, they learn that addition, for example, means finding the whole when the parts are known.

                Start with things you see in a room
Shapes. Tiles, books, tins, pencil, pen, box, glass, plates etc. identify and start measuring by using the scale
Let us take an example of a steel plate that we use for eating.
Shape of the plate is   ROUND (Circle)
What is the Diameter of the plate: measure it with a scale.
What would be its area?  How to find the area?
What would be its circumference? How to find the Circumference?
Is there a formula? If yes what is it?

Now let us make a chart
Item
Shape
Remark
Round Steel plate
Round
Can be called a Circle
Find the Diameter
Measure the centre from one edge to another
This is a diameter
It is twice a radius
Area
Related to radius
Coverage of the plate
Circumference
Outer measure

Formula
Area- pie x r x r
Circumference= 2x pie x r
What is Pie?
Relation between
Diameter and Radius D/ r= Pie

At class III level we can use
Addition------------------------------Upto three digits
Subtraction--------------------------Upto 3 digits
Multiplication-----------------------Upto 2 digits
Division-------------------------------Just a single digit
Note: This can go up progressively till 4 digits
In India we do not encourage a child to use a calculator in the early stages.
Abacus is okay till class IV, there after it is going to be Reasoning and Logic. Hence it is not advisable to compel the child to learn more.
Encourage the child to learn the tables upto 2 x 20 , 3 x 20………. 20x 20. This will give advantage in speed maths.
Greatest and smallest = largest and least = biggest and smallest
Knowing the exact meaning will help the child to perform better
Unlike our mother tongue, English language has more synonyms and antonyms. One must know this to do better in maths.
Check these out;
What is
2 + 8
10
What is the sum of
Successor of 3  and
Predecessor of 9
answer
Successor of 3 = 4
SUM = Add
Predecessor is one before
Ie 9-1 = 8
Answer 8 + 3 =11
Note:
New terms
Successor = that comes after
Predecessor = That comes before

Sum = Addition = total
What is the total of
Largest one digit number
And the least single digit number
Largest = Biggest
Least = Smallest
9 + 1 = 10
    Check sheet :
Add the largest two digit Number (same as the greatest Two digit Number or the biggest two digit number)
Add the largest two digit number to the least/ smallest two digit number?
Add the largest two digit number to the least two digit number?

99     +
10    =
109

1.       Add the largest two digit number to the least two digit number?
2.       Add the largest 2 digit number to the least 2 digit Number.
3.       Now see the underlined words. This is what is required to be understood by the student
4.       You may use a colour to underline these words or use a highlighter
5.       Let us now see this effect
6.       Add the largest 2 digit number to the least 2 digit Number.
7.       Add the largest 2 digit number to the least 2 digit Number.
8.       Which is better? Use this technique
9.       Children have a tendency to learn it in three ways- Writing- Listening – doing
10.   How to test? Tell the student  to add 9 to 12, if he does mentally then he is a listener ( Audio learner)
11.   If he goes for a book to write and add he is more of a visual learner
12.   If the child uses his fingers and then counts loudly he is a audio- visual and manipulative learner
13.   All the above learning is okay in lower classes.
14.   Mathematics has to be written and practiced for better performance.
15.   Word problems will be understood only by using logic and analytical method.

Using speed building test every day with lesser timing will be the best method to help the Neurons to get tuned up.
