The government is actively considering a proposal to give SSC officers the option of working for 18 years. The move is also aimed at addressing the problem of a shortage of officers, particularly in the lower ranks. The tenure of SSC officers at the moment is 10 years, which is extendable by four years. The army will now give these officers an option of re- employment for another four years. Through the new initiative, an SSC officer will have the choice to remain in service for 18 years. After re- employment, the officer will continue to enjoy the same rank and respect but with a downgraded pay- scale as is the standard norm. More intake of officers: The upcoming centre at Kapurthala would be country’s fifth selection centre and would facilitate the intake of more officers into the armed forces, which is facing the shortage of around 13,000 officers. According to official figures, the Army has the shortage of around 10,500 officers, Navy has a shortage 1,400 and the Air Force has the shortage of around 1,100 officers. New Army SSB Centre to be opened in Punjab

The Indian Army has decided to start a provisional Service Selection Centre (North) at Kapurthala in Punjab from October 1, Commander-in-Chief of Western Command Lt General K J Singh on Sunday said. In a huge respite to thousands of youngsters in the region who aspire to become defence officers, the Army authorities would start a special selection centre (North) from October 1 at Kapurthala in Punjab. The centre would provisionally function for around three years from Kapurthala military station and after that it would be shifted to the state of art 200-acre campus at Ropar (near Chandigarh), which is at present under construction.
