To Join Or Not To Join in Defence ? Read it take a pick
PERSONAL OPINION OF THE AUTHOR
For Defence Career:
Defence Forces Offer one of the finest Careers
The only reason for joining the Defence Services is to "Serve the Nation".
Pay:
As a Lieutenant/ Flying Officer /Sub Lieutenant
Rs. 75,000 per month incl pay and perks As per 7th pay commission
Paid Higher education after a certain level of Service
Better life style while in Peace area.
Children get better facilities while in army cantonment or if you get posted to Class A institute such as
Officers training Institutes or
Other rank Training Institutes
Foreign assignments
Staff appointments
The only reason for joining the Defence Services is to "Serve the Nation".
In any case - individuals who are money-minded are advised not to join the Armed Forces
AGAINST:
Frequent postings
disturbed family life
service in field area almost certain
May not get leave as per choice
Posting to your place of liking is almost NO
Promotion- A biggest problem- Not every officer who becomes a lieutenant becomes a COLONEL
and command an out fit.
Most Retire as Time scale ( like honorary rank) Colonel provided he slogs for more than 26 years of service
Yet if you want to become an officer you will have to face
a) A written Exam like UPSC, NDA, CDSE, AFCAT, Territorial Army, ACC
b) Every one who aspire to become an officer will have to Qualify the Services Selection Board
the result is about 10% of those who appear for SSB. ( most of the time it is less)
c) Tough Medical
d) Merit list
e) Equally tough Physical Training in academies.
f) If you do not pass the departmental exam you will lose out on seniority.
g) Medical problems if aggravated or injury sustained during leave. You or likely to be sent home.
You cannot save much-
You are bound to end up in jobs that will not be very satisfactory after your retire.Very few become entrepreneurs- Beware you will often Lose out
Civil Services will always have an edge in career prospects and compensation over the Defence Services.
Also - one must remember that most Defence Officers retire early in their 50s as compared to Civil Services who retire at 60 - so you will lose out on pension too as compared to your civilian counterparts.

Yet You have a Great Reputation.
