1.Rs.10 lakh The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will offer the insurance cover of Rs.10 lakh at a premium of one rupee from September 2016 to those railway passengers who will book their tickets through IRCTC website. The insurance cover is besides the compensation given by the Railways in case of accidents to valid ticket holders. The insurance will provide coverage against death, injury and disabilities caused due to accidents. Though, it is the passengers’ choice to opt for the insurance as it is a voluntary offer.
2. July 26 The 17th anniversary Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated in India on July 26, 2016 to mark the success of Operation Vijay and in honour of the Kargil War’s Heroes. Every year, on this day, the Prime Minister of India pays homage to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, New Delhi.
3. Pune The BRICS policy planning dialogue meeting has been held in Patna, Bihar. It provided an opportunity for exchanges on strategic assessments of international situation and the regional situation of each country and trends therein.
4. Tamil Nadu India’s first green rail corridor ” has recently launched by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu in Tamil Nadu to mark the first discharge free route in railways. It is a 114-km long Rameswaram-Manamadurai stretch in Tamil Nadu which ensures zero toilet discharge on rail tracks.
5. Kochi India’s first-ever Water Metro project “Kochi Water Metro project” has been launched by the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Kochi. The purpose of the project is to provide water connectivity to people living between islands in the Kochi agglomeration area and the city. The new boats which will be procured for this project will provide the same transportation experience as the Metro, and will be called ‘Water Metros’. The financing for this project is being done by the Indo-German Bilateral Cooperation, under the climate-friendly urban mobility plan. The project will implemented by the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and will become operational in 2 years.
6. Javelin throw Neeraj Chopra from Haryana, the Javelin thrower, has become the first-ever Indian to hold a world record in athletics (junior or senior). He achieved this feat by throwing javelin at a record distance of 86.48m at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland and won gold in the event. His effort of 86.48m brought India’s first World record and the country’s first-ever gold in any World athletics championships in any category. Despite this performance, he failed to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics as the cutoff date was July 11, 2016.
7.Avasarala Kanyakumari Avasarala Kanyakumari, the well-known violinist from south India, has been chosen for the prestigious 2016 Sangita Kalanidhi Award of the Madras Music Academy. With this, she became the first female violinist to get the award in the history of the Music Academy. The award will be conferred to her on January 1, 2017 at the Sadras. This honour is considered one of the highest awards in Carnatic music.
8. Lewis Hamilton Lewis Hamilton, a British Formula One racing driver from England, has won the 2016 Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring in Mogyorod, Hungary. It is his 5th title of the 2016 season after Monaco Grand Prix, Canadian Grand Prix, Austrian Grand Prix and British Grand Prix.
9. Pune Michelle Kakade from Pune has become the first person to complete the Indian Golden Quadrilateral on foot. It took her 193 days, 1 hour & 9 minutes to cover 5968.4 kms of the Golden Quadrilateral that connects the 4- major metros of India. With this, she booked her name in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Fastest time to travel the Indian Golden Quadrilateral on foot (female)” across 57 major cities in India and on the India’ most valuable and largest highway project.
10. Turkey The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has recently declared a 3-month state of emergency in the aftermath of coup attempt. As per Article 121 of the Turkish constitution, the state of emergency allows the president and cabinet to bypass parliament when drafting new laws and to restrict or suspend rights and freedoms.
