PSA - Problem Solving Assessment 

The Central Board of Secondary Education introduced PSA (Problem Solving Assessment) in 2013 for assessing life skills of students of class IX and XI. As a concept, it is new though still remains a pen-paper tests with one distinction that the paper will be set and sent to schools by the board and will be assessed by the board itself

About PSA

The Problem Solving Assessment has been designed to improve the Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Creative thinking, Decision Making and Communication skills in learners. It is widely accepted that these are the abilities that an individual needs to be successful in their Personal, Professional and Social life. With the intension of fostering these abilities in learners at very early age, we have introduced PSA for classes VI to X from the academic session 2015

CBSE discontinues Problem Solving Assessment for Classes IX / XI

The CBSE has decided to discontinue the problem solving assessment tests for classes IX and XI from the academic year 2015-2016. The problem-solving assessments (PSA) are conducted in CBSE affiliated schools for assessing the student’s ability to solve application-based problems. >. see news


Details of PSA 

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced Problem Solving Assessment for students of Class IX from the academic session 2012-13. In the view of ‘CBSE-PSA’, National Teachers Council introduced PSA for classes VI to X with the intension of fostering Problem Solving abilities in learners at very early age. This assessment gives a good practice and preparation for students of classes IX and X for ‘CBSE-PSA’. Further, schools can count PSA score towards FA-4 for classes VI to VIII in English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. We conduct two Problem Solving Assessments in an academic year (one in each term) and issue a Report Card at a very nominal fee of Rs.100
The Problem Solving Assessment covers life skills related to the following elements
1. Language Conventions
2. Qualitative Reasoning
3. Quantitative Reasoning
Eligibility: Students of Classes VI to X in CBSE schools

PSA Marking Scheme & Syllabus

PSA Class VI Syllabus: The syllabus for 9th class is common for all students. The questions will be based on Science and Math along with a passage in English from ancient literature. The questions can span from any topic of the two subjects and are not subjected to the information that is delivered to students through textbooks
PSA Class X Syllabus: Irrespective of the stream a student has opted for, the test will contain questions from Physics, Chemistry, Maths. Again, the questions can span from any topic, not specific to what the students have learned in the classroom
The PSA is a part of FA that holds 10% of the total marks. It will assess the following areas:-
i. Quantitative Reasoning (18 Questions)
ii. Qualitative Reasoning (18 Questions)
iii. Language Conventions (24 Questions)
The paper will consist of 60 questions that will have to be answered in 90 minutes
No. of PSA: 2 (One in each Term)
Medium of Examination: English

Date of Examination of PSA 

PSA -1: 02nd September (Wednesday)
PSA-2: 30th October (Friday)
Issue of Report Card: Second week of December (All the registered schools will get marks of students at the end of each PSA)
Exam Fee: Annual Exam Fee for PSA per student is Rs.100 (Rupees hundred only) for two Exams

How CBSE PSA is helpful?

It helps students to understand their strength and weakness related to problem solving skills. It stimulates students’ interest and enthusiasm in problem solving
Students will get an opportunity to appear for a well researched, Scientifically Designed age appropriate PSA twice a year with a very nominal annual fee of Rs.100. Every registered student will get a detailed Report Card
It helps students of classes IX & X to prepare for ‘CBSE-PSA’ and score better grades in board’s exam; it improves the speed of solving the problems in ‘CBSE-PSA’
PSA will help students to inculcate various problem-solving skills such as Analytical Ability, Lateral Thinking, Initiative, Logical Reasoning and Persistence
