The Romanies are
travelling gypsies. They first arrived
in the British Isles in the Middle ages, though their ancestors had set out
from India long before that. Originally,
they were entertainers, acrobats, jugglers, and musicians. It’s been calculated that there are about
fifty to sixty thousand gypsies in Britain
but there are very few families that follow the traditional way of
life-not more than a dozen or so. That
way of life means living in a horse drawn caravan, and cooking your own meals
outdoors on a open fire, no matter what the weather ‘s like. But the vast majority of the gypsies have
moved into the towns and use cars and lorries these days.
Some Romanies, still
on the road, live for most of the year by selling home-made products like
