The country’s first-ever academy to train girls for joining the armed forces as commissioned officers is expected to get off the ground shortly, with the selection of its first director expected to be done by the Punjab Government this month.
Christened Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (MBAFPI), it will select Class XII pass 25 girls from Punjab and groom them over a period of three year. Besides doing their graduation, these girls will also acquire officer-like qualities.
The establishment of the academy assumes significance as there has been a consistent increase in the number of women officers in the three services over the past few years.
The academy has been named after Mai Bhago, a legendary Sikh woman warrior who fought the Mughals in 1705 along with Guru Gobind Singh. The selection of students will commence next month and the process of tying up with local colleges from where the girls will pursue their graduation is underway.
The post of the MBAFPI director will be occupied by a retired Brigadier-level officer, for which the selection is expected to be done by the state government next week. There are several applicants for the post. The first phase of the construction of the academy’s building is scheduled to be completed this month. The state government allocated about 8.5 acres for the purpose in Mohali last year.
The institute will be the second such academy in Punjab after the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (MRSAFPI) in Mohali. The MRSAFPI enrols boys who have completed their matriculation and prepares them over a two-year period for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) along with ensuring their education up to Class XII.
According to MRSAFPI director Maj-Gen BS Grewal (retd), record 2,500 boys applied for 52 seats at the institute this year.
