Preparation for Success

Hit and Trail method of preparing a candidate for Sainik School Entrance

For many years I have conducting training for students those who are aspirants of Sainik Schools.
I have found two types of students during my training session.
a)      A student who grasps the concept fast and understands the ways to solve a word problem
b)      Another type of students is not that sharp and takes time to understand the basic concepts.

The problem lies in inability to understand what has been asked, what the steps LOGIC involved in solving the problems are.  When I asked the psychologist, he said those children lack the power of logical and analytical reasoning.
What is Logical Reasoning?
2 + 2 = ? ( add 2 to 2 that makes 4) this is simple logic
Now lets us see what is analytical thinking  what are the ways of getting the answer by using  only single digit nos, and by using only+ and – signs.
Now you can see one has to think and analyze how to get the answer.
If your child is able to get at least 4 different ways of getting the answer you need not worry he or she is good.
Let us explore the possibilities of getting the answer 4, by using only single digits
2 +2 = 4, 1+3 = 4, 9-5 = 4, 6-2 = 4, 7-3= 4. 8-4 = 4, 5-1= 4, 2+1+1= 4,
As you can see there is a lot of combination to get the answer. If the child is able to comprehend this logical ways to solve he will be able to get the answer quickly.

A child who is good in ABACUS, may not be able to solve these problems logically.  I have tried it out with children who have crossed the third stage in ABACUS.
As the child to find the number of total second in 1 hour and 23 minutes.
Of ask him to calculate  the distance covered by a car that travels at a speed of 72 km per in m/sec.
It has to use LOGICAL deduction; this is not possible in ABACUS. (abacus is simply an ordinary basic calculator)

Hence dear parents, do not waste money on teaching abacus, instead try teaching the child by practical means, examples and different words used for ADDITION/ Subtraction/ Multiplication/ Division
Until and unless the child knows the SUM means Addition, it will not be able to do this
Ask the abcus child what is the sum of 383 and 293.  (you tell him add 383 and 293- his mind moves the beeds fast) but it gets stuck if the child does not understand the MEANING of SUM
This is just an example
Sainik School maths are involved in three categories
a)      Basic concept based questions
b)      Application based Questions
c)       Skill based questions.

It is only when the child is able to solve the Skill based questions he gets chance to get into merit
What is skill based question?
Ram had 1 ½   dozens mangoes, he consumed all but, 4 how many where left with him?

At Sainik Academy we teach the child Vedic maths so that he does the sums quickly.
We ask them to write each question step by step, so that he understand the logic behind it.
