Ways to Join as a Pilot in Indian Air Force ( Q and A )
Q.1. Sir, My aim is
to become a Pilot in the Indian Airforce, how do I go about it. Presently I am
studying class X, CBSE syllabus
A.1. Dear Aspirant, you can become a pilot in the
IAF in the following ways:-
a) National Defence
Academy-
This is done after +2, VIA UPSC Written Exam (April and Aug) SSB
Interview; Medical followed by Merit list, about 75 vacancies is available
every six months
If you have take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class XII, and
earned a degree in any discipline, and below the age of 23 years, you can apply

b) UPSC- Combined Defence Services Exam (or) For Permanent Commission
c) AFCAT- Airforce Common Admission Test ( For ) Short Service
Commission.
d) As an Airman ( ie. After joining IAF in the ranks as an aircrafts
man or LAC you can try and become a pilot.)
e) You will be trained in NDA for 3 years and 1 year at Air Force
Academy ( Dundigal- AP)
f) In case of direct entry 6 months administrative training followed by
flying training for 1 year
Note: AFCAT written test is administered for Graduates and Airmen
(Serving soldiers of IAF)
This test is held twice a year.
One clearing a written test you will be called for Services Selection
Board for 6 days interview followed by four days of Medical test. Those who
qualify these tests would be Merit listed by the Air Headquarters and issued
joining instructions.
There is a choice for B.E/ B.E/ Science Graduates to choose for (For
both men and women)
a)
Pilot
Entry, Technical Entry (For Engineers)/Ground Duties
b)
Choice
in flying Fighter aircrafts, transports or Helicopters is given as per merit,
aptitude and vacancy.
Note: Women are presently offered Short
Service commission up to 14 years. (A few branch offers permanent commission)
Q.2
what is the height required for pilots?
Answer:
As per Indian standards, a person who is 5 feet and 2 inches is
considered okay.
However, the length from hip bone to the sole
of the foot has to be 99 cms. If you are too tall, you may not be found
suitable for certain types of aircrafts. This you will be told during the
Medical examination.
Q.3. If I have an eye power of -0.5 am I
eligible to join the IAF as a Pilot?
Answer: You will be considered for
Helicopters and Transport. However, for fighter pilots the eye sight has to be
6/6 in both eyes.
Note: a) Colour Blindness in not acceptable for
flying branch
b) certain grade in colour blindness can be acceptable to ground duties. C) Lasik surgery before the age of 20 is not acceptable and certainly not for flying branch. However, it is acceptable for other branches, provided you had carried out the operation at least a year before the medical examination.
