News:
Assam Government agreed to a proposal for setting up of a Consulate General Office of Royal Government of Bhutan in Guwahati and conveyed willingness to the Ministry of External Affairs. They also decided to share intelligence inputs between them to put a tab on terrorist activities. The meeting discussed mechanism for vibrant entry-exit mechanism to give an impetus to industry and commerce. They also discussed the existing boundaries that Assam shared with Bhutan and exchanged inputs on missing boundary pillars and vowed to take immediate steps to address the issue.
The UN Security Council has extended an arms embargo on the Central African Republic and a travel ban and asset freeze on blacklisted individuals for another year. The resolution also added a new provision making sexual violence a criterion for sanctions. It also encouraged member states to require that airlines provide advance passenger information to national authorities to make sure the travel ban is enforced.


US President Donald Trump ordered "extreme vetting" of people entering the US from certain Muslim-majority countries and banned the entry of Syrian refugees until further notice, as part of new measures to "keep radical Islamic terrorists" out of America. The executive order "Protection of The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States" notes that the steps taken by the US in the aftermath of 9/11 has not been able to deter terrorists from entering the country. The executive order suspends the US Refugee Admissions Programme for 120 days until it is reinstated "only for nationals of countries for whom" members of Trumps Cabinet deem can be properly vetted.






President Pranab Mukherjee gave Governor of Assam, Banwarilal Purohit additional charge of Meghalaya. Besides, President also gave Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya additional charge of Arunachal Pradesh. These appointments came a day after President accepted the resignation of V. Shanmuganathan, as Governor of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. The appointment, eligibility, tenure and other provisions related to Governor are mentioned in the Articles 156-167 of the Indian Constitution. The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports reconstituted Target Olympic Podium (TOP) committee with objective of identifying and supporting potential medal prospects for 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games under Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme. The committee will be headed by Abhinav Bindra, Olympic Gold Medalist. Its members are Anil Khanna, Prakash Padukone, Karnam Malleshwari, P. T. Usha, Murlidhar Raja, Anjali Bhagwat, Rekha Yadav, Dr. S.S. Roy and Inder Dhamija. The TOP Scheme aims to identify and support potential medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. Under this scheme, the selected athletes are provided financial assistance for their customized training at Institutes.

In order to strengthen the inter-operability and joint operations of the Indian Navy in a complex environment, the Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX), an annual Indian Navy exercise was kicked off the Western Seaboard. The last edition of the exercise was conducted in January 2015. The month long exercise will see the participation of ships and aircraft of both the Western and Eastern Naval Commands and assets from the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard exercising together. TROPEX 17 exercise is aimed at testing combat readiness of the combined fleets of the Indian Navy, and the assets of the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard.

The Unit-II of Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant in Tamil Nadu will soon start commercial generation of power, after it attained full power generation capacity of 1000 Mega watt. Till now 13,197 million units of electricity has been generated in the first unit of Kudankulam fetching Rs 1000 crore revenue for the unit. The nuclear power generation has gone up to 6,780 mega watt in the country with power generation in the second unit. The 1000 Mega watt Kudankulam nuclear power plant was built with Russian expertise in November 1988.
The Indian women boxing team secured a historic third place finish at the 6th Nations Cup in Serbia. India finished the tournament with one gold, four silver and a bronze medal. The gold medal was won by Haryana-girl Neeraj in the 51-kg category, who defeated Kazakhstan's Jaina Shekerbekova in the final. Russia finished second in the tournament behind winners Kazakhstan.
