Southern Naval Command gets it new chief – Air Marshal S Neelakantan
i. S Neelakantan, Air Marshal took charge as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Air Command and the traditional Guard of Honour was presented to him by the Air Warriors.
ii. He was commissioned as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force on December 28, 1977.
iii. He is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and Tactics and Combat Development Establishment.
iv. Mr. Neelakantan has flown over 3100 hours on various aircrafts and became aQualified Flying Instructor. He also commanded a frontline fighter squadron and two flying bases.
v. He was a recipient of Yudh Seva Medal and Vayu Sena Medal and has also led theIAF contingent in Congo as part of the UN Mission.
vi. The Southern Air Command(SAC) of the Indian Air Force  is headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram . This is one among the five commands of IAF. This command was started on 19 July 1984 and was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India. It is noted that the conflicts in Sri Lanka and the need for establishing a strong base over the Indian Ocean resulted to the formation of this new command.

Patna Pirates titled as the Winner of Season 4 Pro Kabbadi League
Patna Pirates won in the season 4 finals of the Pro Kabaddi League by defeatingJaipur Pink Panthers. Being a winner of season 3, Patna again proved its ability in the Kabaddi league by winning this season.
i. Patna Pirates mandled a convincing win over Jaipur Pink Panthers with a point set of 37-29 to continue their winning spree in Pro Kabaddi league.


NEET Exam gets constitutional status – Lok Shaba passes bills favoring it status
Lok Shaba has passed two bills favoring the National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (NEET) examination, for its constitutional status as promulgated by the government of India, which is to be mandated from next academic year.
i. The Rajya Sabha passed the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and the Dentist (Amendment) Bill, 2016, seeking to amend the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and the Dentist Act, 1948.
ii. The bills were passed by Lok Sabha on 19 July and aim to bring private colleges under the ambit of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill and Dentist (Amendment) Bill. Thesetwo bills assign constitutional status to the NEET examination.
iii. The bill aims to end the multiplicity of medical examinations and pave the way for fair and transparent examinations.
iv. The new legislation will end exploitation of students by colleges demanding capitation fees; a common entrance exam means students will not have to travel long distances to appear for various admission tests

i. Lieutenant General Bipin Rawat took charge as the General Officer Commanding in Chief of Pune based Southern Command.  He will fill the shoes of Lt Gen Ashok Singh.

India's Vivek Teja becomes World Karate Championi. India’s martial arts hero and rising star Vivek Teja bagged the World Karate Champion (All Styles) at the Martial Arts World Championships in Sydney, Australia.

i. The National Anti-Doping Agency has given a clean chit to wrestler Narsingh Yadav from doping charges, with this he will be eligible to take part in Rio Olympics.
Yadav qualified for the Rio after he won bronze medal in the World’s Championship held last year. India stages in 15 games including Wrestling with 120 athletes in the Mega event.
