How To Become A Pilot In The Indian Defence Forces?

QUALIFICATION

A few Qualification that is expected from a candidate who aspire to become a Pilot as for as Indian Air Force or Indian Navy / Indian Coast Guard / Indian Army or other Central Police Organisation are:-
  1. Edn: Upto +2 With Physics and Maths
  2. Health: Physical fitness shape - 1
  3. Eye Power: not more than 0.5 but correctable up to 6/6
  4. Must Qualify in Pilot Aptitude Test
  5. Should not be suffering from colour blindness
  6. Leg Length from hip bone to heal should not be less than 99 cm
  7. Should have qualified Services Selection Board Interview
  8. A under graduate Degree in any discipline (First Class)
  9. Male candidates are eligible to fly Fighters
  10. Female Candidates are eligible to fly Helicopters or Transport Air crafts
  11. Age should be between 18 to 26 years( in case of CPL Holders - 26 years)
  12. For coast Guard it is upto 26 years

HOW TO ENTER? For Men:->


1. National Defence Academy 3 years at Khadakvasala and then 1.5 years at Air Force Academy


2. Via- CDSE-Combined Defence Services Entry- 1.5 Years at Air Force Academy


3. Via AFCAT- Air Force Common Admission Test 1.5 years at Air Force Academy


4. With out Entrance Test: - Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard- 6 months at Naval academy - Then 1 year at AFA or IGRUA (Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy- This is a commercial Pilot Training Institute located at Rae Baraily. This is may be a stop gap arrangement


5. For Army Aviation- One has to become an officer via, OTA/ IMA, and after a few years of service can opt for flying branch- They are now being trained at AFA and then move to Deolali for Helicopter training. 6. The Navy and Coast Guard pilots will undergo training for 22 weeks in flying and aviation subjects at the Helicopter Training School, Indian Naval Air Squadron 651 (HTS) at INS Rajali.

    NDA: While studying in class XII, you can take this UPSC Written Exam in the month of Aug. Apply for this in the month of May , is that just after you complete the class XI

    After Graduation:- Apply for Air Force Common Admission Test- held in Feb and Oct each year Apply online 4 months before the exam

    The candidates who are declared by UPSC as having cleared the written exam or
    recommended by Preliminary Interview Board (PIB) in case of Territorial Army (TA), Or
    those shortlisted in Direct Entries are called through Call Letters to appear for SSB, at the Centre allotted to the candidate.
    There have been instances when the call-up letter fails to reach the candidate and the onus lies on the candidate to be alert and contact the office after a reasonable amount of time
    If the letter is not received when UPSC written has been cleared.
    This is similar for service candidates, except that their movement is intimated to their seniors via movement orders.

    Pilot Aptitude Battery Test also called PABT

    This test is conducted for the candidates who aspire to join flying branch of Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Indian Army and Coast Guard of Indian Armed Forces.
    Pilot Aptitude Battery Test is aimed at assessing a candidate’s aptitude to be trained as a pilot.
    It is conducted during Services Selection Board. One can only take Pilot Aptitude Battery Test once in life time.
    Newer format of PABT comprises three tests
    1. Instrument Battery Test (INSB)
    2. Sensory Motor Apparatus Test (SMA) and
    3. Control Velocity Test (CVT). Instrument Battery Test

    Instrument Battery Test



    It is also called INSB is a paper pencil and machine based test.
    The Instruments Battery Test (INSB) comprises two parts.
    It assesses assimilation of the briefing and the ability of an individual to read and interpret the dials of an instrument panel of an aircraft.
    The candidates who score the minimum laid down criteria are subjected to the machine test.

    The machine test includes Sensory Motor Apparatus Test (SMA) and Control Velocity Test (CVT).
    These tests measure the psychomotor co-ordination skill of the individual. These tests are conducted on a single day and administered only once in life time.

    Indian Coast Guard Selection Board


    One can also become a pilot in Army, Navy, or Coast Guard
    The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is the maritime Para Military Force (PMF) of the Union of India operating under the Ministry of Defence. ICG officers selection is similar to SSB and is conducted in two phases.
    Phase 1

    It is called Preliminary Selection Board (PSB) which is similar to SSB screening tests
    Phase 2

    It is called Final Selection Board (FSB) that includes :-

    1. Psychology Tests

    2. GTO Tasks

    3. Personal Interview and

    4. Conference


  • PSB centers are located at

    1. Noida

    2. Mumbai

    3. Chennai and

    4. Kolkata


    FSB center is located only at Noida.
    Candidates are called for screening test at any one of the PSB centers. Shortlisted candidates from PSB are instructed to report at the FSB center for further testing at a later date.
