Medical Exam in Defence forces recruitment and after SSB what do they check ?

Medical Tests after SSB Interview

The following points must be kept in mind.

Height and weight should be within prescribed limits separately for males and females. However 10% plus or minus deviation from normal is permitted.

Chest should well formed. No deformity of chest like pigeon chest. Measurement of chest minimum 77cm and expansion 5cm. no gynaecomastia.

Skin should be clear, no fungus infection of peri anal region/ No eczema or dermatitis No nodule or tumour and no haemangioma.

Ears- No wax/ perforation. No hearing loss. Whisper at 600cm..

Nose- No DNS/ perforation of septum.

Dental points- Minimum 14 dental points. No cavity. If cavity is present it should be filled with permanent filling and not temporary filling. No pyorrhea, No gum disease.

Tongue-No coating, No foul breath.

Tonsils not enlarged or septic.

Heart- No mumur, No adventitious sound and no congenital heart disease.

Chest- Normal breath sound , No adventitious sounds or Rhonch/ crepts.

BP- 120/80mm of Hg.

Abdomen- Liver not enlarged/ fatty changes. No disease of gall bladder. Spleen not palpable. Kidney no stone in kidney, ureter or bladder.

Legs- No knock knee or flat foot, No varicose veins.

Hands- No tremors or sweaty hands, No cubitus valgus, No clubbing, No deformity of Fingers. Six fingers are not allowed. No tattoo on exposed parts. Only religious tattoo is permitted on the back of the hand or inner side of forearm. In treated fracture of any bone they should be no rod or plates inside the body.

Male organs- No Hydrocoele/ Hernia/ Varicocoele. If operated for hernia it should have been done 1 year prior to medical board and for Hydrocoele six months period is mandatory. No Phimosis. Scrotum should have two testes. If only one testes ultrasound should be done to locate the other one. No Piles. 

Females breast should be well develop. No nodule/ Fibroadenom. Periods should be regular. No Menorrhagia/ Oligomenorrhoea/ Amenorrhoea. No disease of ovaries.

Eyes should be white quiet and move in all directions.

Eye sight 6/6 in both eyes without glasses. If glasses, for NDA minus 2.5 myopia is permitted and for CDS minus 3.5 myopia is permitted. Same for technical also. No colour blindness and no night blindness. No contact lens No keratoplasty. For improving the eye sight lasik laser treatment is permitted with certain conditions. But it should have been done one year prior to the medical board and below 20 years of age. 

For pilot’s leg length 99-120cms. Thigh length less than 64cm, sitting length 81.5- 96 cms. There should be disease of spine. 

Most of these problems are correctable with proper guidance and correct advise. It is advisable to get the medical examination done prior to SSB. They are all TR( Temporary Rejection) points.
