Ladies and gentlemen,
Today, I shall
discuss about what is SSB all about, contrary to the belief that ssb is a test,
it is a fact finding tool to assess your personality.
All the tests are
just tools in the assessment officers.
Let us take an
example of a full body check up.
The doctors carry out
a number of tests to learn about the various condition of out body parts.
The ECG tells the
physician about the condition of the functioning of our heart. The EEG tells
him about the functioning of the brain.
Every test conducted
by the doctor, tells him about that particular organ and its present condition.
Likewise, the tests
at ssb tells the assessment officer as
to how the individual will shape up and whether he is likely to fit in the job
that would be assigned to him after training.
The assessment is
based on long experience and observation of the individual and his response to
situations and problems that are put forth to him/her.
In psychology, they
give stimuli to your brain and make you commit the reaction in writing.
In group /individual
tests, it is your exhibited performance under some stress and conditions.
While, the
interviewing officer, is looking for your responses via spoken language and how
you have lived your life from the day you begin to understand and till the time
of appearing for an interview.
In ssb, there is no
right and wrong answers, all they look out for actions and reactions in timed
tested tools.
Here more than your
physical body, your mental reaction is noted.
As we are all aware
that different persons react differently to the same situation and in different
conditions and at different time, while under pressure and while not under
pressure.
An individual’s
reactions are quantified under 15 different headings. This judgement is done by three assessment officers. Only if
their finding is acceptable to the organization, a candidate will be accepted,
if not he will not be accepted.
Some of these qualities are highly trainable; some are moderately
trainable while some are highly trainable.
In short there is no mathematical formula or template for any frame a
right answer. The responses are
Either acceptable or not acceptable.
Some responses are semi acceptable, given the right training these
individuals can come up with an acceptable solution.
Let us see an example:
YOU DO NOT KNOW SWIMMING, YOU ARE IN A JUNGLE, AND YOU HAVE SOME HELP
MATERIAL SUCH AS ALL PURPOSE COMMANDO KNIEF, ROPE AND PLENTY OF TIME.
HOW WILL YOU CROSS A LONG AND WIDE RIVER WHICH FLOWS WITH SOME MODERATE
CURRENT, BUT DEEP IN MANY PLACES?
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM.
In order to put you under pressure the assessment officer may tell you
that there is a forest fire
Or some wild animals are chasing you
Or the sun will go down in another 20 minutes
You have a partner who is injured
Or some unexpected happening, how you react is what he is looking for.
In order to solve you will have to
a)
Think
logically
b)
Look
out for available resources
c)
Think
and act quickly
d)
Must
take some risk and bold action
e)
In
the end the action taken by you should be such that a fairly intelligent and
trained individual will be able to solve the problem in a satisfactory
condition, without loss of life and material.
f)
Planning,
organizing, and executing is the need of the hour. How you achieving this aim
is what they are looking for.
g)
A
workable solution under the given circumstances is what they are looking for.
h)
If
you give up or unable to come up with a workable solution within the time
specified will tell you if you are selected or otherwise.
During the course of
training candidates to face the services selection board interview, I used to
ask the candidate the following questions.
While you go for a
morning walk you found a one rupee coin. How best can you make use of it so
that the society is benefitted and you are also satisfied with your actions?
The answers that give
me will give me some indication as to what type of person you
Another question that
I ask the candidate is to demonstrate, how he or she will earn hundred rupees in 6 hours, by using their
intelligence, without cheating, telling lies , begging, borrowing, pawning
or doing any menial labour.
Their action will
tell you how they can perform by making use of their intellectual property.
Knowing oneself and
the limit of your physical capabilities will tell you how high you can reach.
Most of the qualities
of a potential leader are Abstract in nature; it has to be demonstrated through
action.
The task of the
assessment officers is to correlate the candidates, thought, words and deeds.
Can fear of height be
written or spoken? It is seen only when the group testing officer makes a
candidate to walk over a one foot wide plank which is placed at a height of 10
feet above the ground. A person who has fear of height will show nervousness,
very slow in movements, hesitation, sweating, finally will give up and come
down. In some cases the individual will avoid attempting.
Determination is yet
another quality that is exhibited by the candidate by repeated action; he will
fail if he does not consider, the reasons for failure, and take remedial
measures.
