We all know that there are two types of intelligence required for success.

a) Intelligence Quotient and               b) Emotional Quotient.

IQ, or intelligence quotient, is a measure of your ability to reason and solve problems. It essentially reflects how well you did on a specific test as compared to other people of your age group. While tests may vary, the average IQ on many tests is 100, and 68 percent of scores lie somewhere between 85 and 115.

While IQ can be a predictor of things such as academic success, Experts caution that it is not necessarily a guarantee of life success. Sometimes people with very high IQs do not fare so well in life, while those with average IQs may thrive.

A Breakdown of IQ Scores

The average score on an IQ test is 100. These labels are often given for IQ scores:

• 1 to 24: Profound mental disability
• 25 to 39: Severe mental disability
• 40 to 54: Moderate mental disability
• 55 to 69: Mild mental disability
• 70 to 84: Borderline mental disability
• 85 to 114: Average intelligence
• 115 to 129: Above average; bright
• 130 to 144: Moderately gifted

Sixty-eight percent of IQ scores fall within one standard deviation of the mean. That means that the majority of people have an IQ score between 85 and 115.

An IQ test is not something that you can really study for in order to improve your score. Instead, these tests are more interested in looking at your ability to use logic to solve problems,³ to recognize patterns, and to make rapid connections between different points of information.

Let us come down to Nuts and Bolts.

Here is a question that is expected to be solved by a sainik school student in 1 min and 5 seconds  and a RMS aspirant in 50 seconds

1. What is the rate of 7 pens if 3 ¾ dozen pens cost is Rs.225?

Look at the stages involved in solving this problem.

First the candidate must know how many articles are there in a Dozen?

Secondly he should be able to make out what does 3 ¾ dz means?

Thirdly he should know what are the information/ facts given about pens and its cost price?

Fourthly he should know how to find the cost of one pen (what is the relation between the rate and number of items?)

Fifthly how to calculate the cost price of 7 pens?

All these information has to be collected in the Brain- Assimilate the Given Date and solve the problem.

This has to be done within 75 seconds.

Here comes the role of IQ.

A child with an average IQ might take about 2 minutes to solve this problem

A child with HIGH IQ will do in under a minute and a Half

To solve this under 75seconds it needs a lot of practice and recalling the stored information.

To know where the information is stored let us look at the function of the brain?

Through the AUDIO- Visual- and sensory perceptions the brain  is triggered by Chemical as well as electrical impulses.

HOW TO TEST IQ OF A 10 year old child?

The best method is to approach a clinical psychologist.

For those who cannot / do not want to go to a Psychologist, there is a simple method.

Get hold of any class VI sainik school Entrance exam paper and ask the child to carry out the test with in the given time. Correct the paper if the child get 50 % in all the subjects, he or she is ok. If not, then take him/her to a psychologist for a detailed testing.
