Defence Academy Coimbatore has been offering coaching and guidance to aspirants for the past decade. We are now offering  tips via this E-book on the important aspects ones should take care while appearing for SSB/ FSB.

Let us start with preparation stage.
Choose the forces in which you want to join, (Once you join you cannot change) so go through the Physical requirement for the job.
Eg: to become a pilot one should have a perfect/acceptable eye sight. (No spectacles)
No Lasics.
Leg Length must be 99 cm from hip to heal.
No Colour Blindness (Get it checked from eye Hospitals)
Hand – eye Co-ordination Test (Pilot aptitude Test)
One must first pass NDA/ AFCAT/CDSE (Physics, Maths is a must while in class XII)
Height, wt Restrictions
Age. Please note the age must be on the day of commencement of the course selected. And not on the day of the entrance exam or  ssb.
Marks restriction  (60% and above)
Having checked all these you can now decide whether you are fit for becoming a pilot or otherwise.
    • In case you want to become a Technical Officer in IAF ( Engineering Graduates- You must qualify in EKT as well as AFCAT)
    • To make sure of your success start at least 100 days before the actual exam is to be taken. This is for those whose I.Q is Well above Average. (For duffers- please increase your preparation time to 200/ 300 days)
    • Collect AFCAT/ CDSE /NDA, Guides, Go through the syllabus, prepare a workable time table and start your Studies.
    • If CDSE then I will recommend you to practice IAS Preliminary exam papers.
    • Practice a lot of MOCK Test ( You can buy Defence Academy AFCAT online practice set pack for one year)
    • How many hours of studies? It depends on you, Just 120 minutes per day is good.
    • Joining a coaching centre is wise or otherwise, If you cannot sit and study at home, then you should join. If you are a Genius in studies, then a big NO to coaching centre.
    • DEDICATION- SYSTEMATIC PLANNED STUDY AND REGULAR PRACTICE IS KEY TO SUCCESS
    • If possible meet an officer in an air force unit and ask him for tips, and to know what not to do ask a person who is/was not successful in making his dream come true.
    • Last  but not the least keep your level of motivation high by visiting IAF Academy if Possible if not , Youtube Zindabad.

Congratulations on passing your hurdle one. Ie. “Clearing the Entrance Examination.”
Mind you only one out of every 10 who appear for Competitive exam makes it.
Last year’s AFCAT cut off mark was 155 out of 300 (with Negative marking)

Choose your DATE WITH SSB.
Putting the best foot forward is what SSB is looking for.
It is like choosing a life mate. ( SSB Decides whether you are the best fit for the marriage alliance with it or not. So be the best sales person- Impress the SSB with your Qualities)

    • Check list before you go on date (SSB) Ticket- Reservation, mode of travel, Reservation at hotel, Youth hostel or your friends/relatives house. (early bird catches the worm- No last minute rush)
    • Certificates-photographs, required ssb kit
    • Dress for final Interview, personal appearance (you are going to meet your life mate selection- so watch it. Do not take it lightly).

Preparation for facing the D-DAY
Filling up the Personal information Questionnaire
Use a Black Jel pen. (Black on white gives a good appearance)
Avoid cutting. (hence Practice writing on it) See TARGET SSB (It my Blog http://defence-career.blogspot.in, or www.ssbcoaching.com)

If you did not join the NCC, reasons for this. ( I have a soft corner for guys and girls from NCC and those who represented INDIA in YEP. My adopted son was an YEP, RD Parade, Commanded the Contingent, now a para commando)

I have won 79% of game I played against the computer, I took part in Chess competition in school, college, and Chennai little masters Chess tournament and was a runner up in the year 2011. This is an example)

The picture story writing requires presence of mind of the writer
He/she must makes a plot and solve the problem  and conclude in a positive manner.
PLOT should be very SIMPLE.
(If the writer involves herself / himself in a big plot the he/she will never be able to interpret
the story because the pictures shown to the candidate would be HAZY.)
The story should not be a superhuman one. It would be considered as WISHFUL and often rejected by the psychologist.
The story plotting should be related to the practical life.
You should not GLORIFY the Hero/ Heroine.
One can imagine, but within the limits.
The actions taken by the main character of your story should be practical and humanly possible in the normal course of life. The action of the main character should clearly bring out Qualities of the main character.
You have to project a Positive Quality or the brighter side of things.

For example if the plot shows a burning person. You should not write how he/she was set on fire. You should write how, ways and means of saving the person from it. Finding out how the person caught fire will lead to nothing. What action has been taken, how the available resources has been used, and how quickly and intelligently your hero/heroine has saved the life is important.
Do not end with the story that the person eventually died. For it shows negativity.

Some of the reasons as to why candidates get rejected in the first stage are as follows:
From Psych’s Point of view:
The story is way away from the picture
Story too wishful/humanly impossible
Not involving others in the picture
Hand writing is not legible
Negativity
GTO
Shy and withdrawn
Inability to speak /communicate well in English/ Hindi
Not listening to others
Dominating
Argumentative
Beating about the bush
Keeps looking at the story he has written.
Keeping quiet and does not participate in discussion.
IO:
Poor Body language
Poor communication
Inability to influence others
Sticking to his/her own story.
Trying to repeat others point.
Inability to use resources and lacks plan/org.

Some of the Dos and Don’ts during Discussion Phase:
  • Be bold and sound confident, start with no of persons in picture, their sex, age, and mood of the persons. What is the picture about?
  • What is the problem faced, and where?
  • How the main character is going about to solve the problem?
  • Positive outcome of his/her efforts
  • Do not look at the story that you have written
  • Face the audience, you must be audible to all in the room
  • Use modulation of your voice to stress where required.
  • Do not stand up or keep looking at assessment officers.
  • While others are narrating their story listen carefully.
  • Start as early as possible to discuss about the story
  • Proceed building the story step by step.
  • Mix every ones story and make a common story.
  • Sometimes the entire group would be shouting, wait for some time and butt in during a break.
  • Do give chance to others to express their ideas.
  • First of all make the group agree to no of persons and sex, age and mood
  • The move on to what is happening?
  • Follow it up with the actions taken by the main character and others.

The armed forces require men and women of caliber who can bear extreme conditions of stress and strain under adverse conditions. An officer is a leader of his men in peace and war. Hence if the RIGHT Candidate is not chosen, the efficient functioning in the forces would be greatly hampered.
