PROGRESSIVE GROUP TASK

As the name suggest it  progressively increases the degree of difficulty in completing these tasks.

In A PGT there are Four sub tasks

The PGT is considered to be one of the tests in the Pre- Confirmatory series.

This is an Out Door Task, where the complete group is tested for various qualities.

These tasks brings out a set of Demonstrated qualities of an individual while performing in a group.

The candidates are assessed as
a) Performer
b) Follower
c) Observer

The inherent qualities of  an individual gets reflected in these tasks.

The bold ones, the later starters, the shy ones, the dull ones all are revealed to the assessment officer

Perhaps that is the reason why many candidates who had done well in other Individual tasks/ tests are  bowled out in this test.

By the end of this test the assessment officer can easily make up his mind about
who is who in the group.

Tips:

  1. Listen to the GTO while he does his briefing.
  2. When taken to the obstacle OBSERVE. ( Look at the obstacle and various structures with in the area ear marked for this task).
  3. Now formulate various method of negotiating the obstacle with the help of the help material those are given to you.
Help Materials would be
  • Wooden Planks 1 / 2 of different length and width
  • Bally (Bamboo)
  • Rope
  • For Some tasks, you would be provided with once use-able help material.

Normally the PGT is designed in such a way that at least by three different methods the group can complete this task

The ideas are grouped into
 a) High level Idea
 b) Middle level Idea
 c) Low level Idea.

To complete these tasks with in the stipulated time
the group has to follow a certain path and co-operate with one another.

The challenge is to observe the restrictions given.

The restrictions are:-

  • one cannot jump ( either vertical  or Horizontal ) that is more than 4 feet distance from you. at any point of time
  • No two help items can be tied
  • You can use only the the White coloured area for men and Material
  • You cannot use the Blue coloured area for the material ( ie. you cannot keep material of any structure that is marked. )
  • The red coloured structures can not be used at all.
  • No muscle power can be used to hold a plank or bally and put weight on it.
  • One should not step in to the out of bound area.
  • Time limit.
  • No two movable items can be tied to make it longer.
  • You have to be with in the Start line and Finish line and not step side ways
  • Unless the whole group crosses the first obstacle, you cannot move on to the next one.

How to go about?

observe- make a mental note of the path to be followed

request the sub ordinates for help and take initiative.

Be a performer and not an observer.

Always help others, suggest ideas.

Do not argue or use abusive language.

Do not lose your cool.

Stick to the rules and regulations
If some one steps on the out of bound area do tell them to come back to the previous position.

Personal attire:

Wash the Chest no and wear it.
What ever is the dress code mentioned in the Call up letter follow it up.
Wear neat dress every day.
See that your shoes and socks are also washed and cleaned.
Shave and look smart.
In short make your self impressive  both by the way you dress and perform.

Simple workable ideas:-
  • For most of the tasks Cantilever technique will work.
hence look out for a method as to how you can use it.
  • Look at  the available structures- see if they can be Bridged or The distance
between them can be reduced in such a way that it is less than 4 feet so that you can get across.
  • Make effective use of rope.
  • Observe the structures, some of the structures can be rotated or pulled in order to make it accessible.
  • Make effective use of once movable item, if provided.
  • Make sure that the third or the fourth person carries the load so that the last man is not put to stress.
  • Give constructive ideas when the person in the front gets stuck.

  • We at Defence Academy have various
