The difference Between Sainik School and RMS school
When should one start preparing the child for Competitive
exams?
In my view the child is ready to face the exam once it can
read, write and understand simple language.
To get an admission in RMS ( Rashtriya Military School)
There are 5 in our country and any one of the 25 Sainik Schools. (The boy can
take the exam at any state for gaining entry into the Sainik School to which
the boy belongs (Domicile)
RIMC any one can take (restriction one seat per state)
The academy prepares the boys physically and mentally to
cope up with the pressure given by the peers while preparing for the entrance
examination.
The Sainik / RMS questions are in three stages
Basic (Straight use of Formula)
Application based (Applying the formula to get the correct
answer)
Skill based (This test will tell who is better than the
average students)
In our past 20 years of experience, we find that the boy who
scores well about 80% always comes in the first list and gets admission.
The sainik school paper is divided into three sections first
section is for just 20 marks (10 x 2= 20)
Minimum qualifying marks is 25; hence he has to correctly
solve the basic concept level questions
Section Two – has 10
question each carries 3 marks – moderate level of difficulty
The Third Section carries 5 marks and has 10 questions; the
merit list is based on the marks scored in this section
To do well in mathematics one has to be good in basic
concept and solve the problems quickly.
Let us see a sample:
Section One Question
- What would be the Simple interested earned on an investment of Rs. 1000 invested for 10 years at the rate of 10 % per annum?
As you can see the answer is just
by application of the simple formula SI = (Principal x Time X Rate of interest)
/ 100
Let us see the solution:
Step 1
|
Given
|
Principal = Rs. 1000, Rate of Interest = 10%,
Time= 10 Years
|
Step 2
|
To find what?
|
To find the Simple Interest
|
Step 3
|
Formula to be used
|
(P X T X R ) / 100
|
Step 4
|
Working
|
Substitute the values in the formula
Ie. (1000 x 10 x 10) / 100 = Rs. 1000 ( Answer)
|
Note
|
This was a simple application of formula
|
- Section – 2, the similar question can be asked as
Find the Amount that Ram would get at the end of 7 years and 6 months,
if he invests Rs. 7500 at the rate of simple interest of 9.25 %
(Once again it is based on the
formula, but here the candidate has to convert the months into years and also
must know how to use the decimal values)
Let us see the solution:
Step 1
|
Given
|
Principal = Rs. 7500, (investment means Principal)
Rate of Interest =9.25%
(convert 9.25% into 925/1000)
Time= 7 Years and 6 months (Convert this into years 7.5 =
75/ 10
|
Step 2
|
To find what?
|
To find the Amount
Here Amount = SI + P, hence we have to find Simple
Interest and
Then add that to Principal to get the Amount
|
Step 3
|
Formula to be used
|
(P X T X R ) / 100
= SI
Amount = SI +
Principal
|
Step 4
|
Working
|
Substitute the values in the formula
Ie. ()
|
Note
|
This was a slightly complicated application of formula

- Section - 3. (Skill based questions)
Ram
gets Rs. 3300 as simple interest on a principal of Rs. 3000 after 365 days,
which was invested at the rate of 10 % simple interest per annum. If he were to
invest the amount only for 146 days, what would be the amount he will receive
after the said period?
Here you will notice the candidate
has to calculate the exact Interest earned in one year and then calculate the
SI for 143 days (Convert the days into Years) and finally find the SI and then
add to get the amount. This involves in three different operations. Here the
steps are necessary to arrive at the correct answer. The understanding the
logic and reason out the outcome, hence a thorough understanding is mandatory
to solve this problem
The sainik school
entrance exam does not have multiple choice questions
Step 1
|
Given
|
Principal = Rs. 3000, Amount = Rs. 3300, Time = 365 days.
Rate = 10 %
|
Step 2
|
To Find
|
SI ------ ( in case I)
SI and Amount in Case ---II
|
Step 3
|
Formula
|
Amount – Principal = Simple Interest
SI = ( P x R x T) / 100
Amount = SI + P
|
Step 4
|
Working
|
Substitute and find out
the SI ( 3300 – 3000 = Rs. 300 SI)
3000 x 146 days x 10 / 100 ( here we need to convert the
Time of days into years, hence 146/ 365
give 2/5)
|
Amount = Rs. 120 + 3000 = Rs.

While the Rashtriya
Military School has Multiple Choice Questions
1. Find
the Area of a Rectangle whose Length is 8m, breadth is 6 m. Choice:
A) 28 m
|
B) 48 m
|
C) 48 sq m
|
D) 24 sq m
|
A) 18 m
|
B) 14 m
|
C) 16 sq m
|
D) 12 m
|
3.Find the cost of
Fencing a rectangular garden whose area
is 288 sm. m and its breadth is 16 m, if cost of fencing is Rs. 15 per m? Choice:
A) Rs. 1018
|
B) Rs. 1040
|
C) Rs. 1020
|
D) Rs. 1200 m
|
Here the answers are given and the candidate is expected to find out the correct answer from the options given below the problem.
Here in order to increase the degree of difficulty, the number of problems would be more than sainik school, while the timing remains the same. (You will find the candidate has to calculate fast and arrive at the solution)
The Syllabus and level of Question would be that of Class V
CBSE.
Hence the candidate has to be prepared to face this test
step by step.
Experience says that an average boy will take about 1 Week
to understand the concept ant do the part one well (I am Talking about just one
chapter, there are 17 chapter to be mastered, hence it would take 17 weeks)
To build the application part the candidate has to prepare
by practicing min 20 questions in each pattern
Only then he will be able to retain- recall – reuse the
formula
Now coming over to Skill based problem- this requires
understanding of various words used to mean one and the same thing.
For example:
Addition = SUM of, Total Of, Put to gather, when added it becomes
Hence teachings of these words are important. For this
language has to be improved. Keep a dictionary nearby and ask the candidate to
refer as much as possible.
